FAQs - The Exploration of Moving Kennebunk Third Grade

Is RSU 21 moving Kennebunk third graders to Sea Road School?

RSU 21 is exploring the move of Kennebunk students in grade 3 to Sea Road School. We have begun holding internal staff discussions and will be holding a parent and community forum. The RSU will also be seeking parent input via a survey.

Is this because of Pre K and a lack of space at Kennebunk Elementary School?

There is adequate space for all programs at either Kennebunk Elementary School (KES) or Sea Road School (SRS) for grade 3. In either place all specials will have a classroom space for instruction (art, music, Spanish, etc.)

What does enrollment look like in our elementary schools?

If grade 3 remains at KES, the enrollment next year will exceed 500 students. In our other elementary schools, the average size is approximately 200-250. Moving grade 3 to Sea Road School would lead to enrollment of approximately 350 at Sea Road and 400 at KES

How would moving grade three impact enrollment?

The move would equalize enrollment and balancing student access to school resources such as administration, guidance counselors, nurses, STEM programming, etc. Also, moving grade 3 to Sea Road would mean 3-4 years at KES, 3 years at Sea Road, and 3 years at MSK.

How do elementary schools typically divide?

Teachers in our K-5 elementary schools work together in primary (K-2) and upper elementary (3-5) teams. In fact, many of our learning standards span grades K-2 and 3-5. This is the most common configuration across the state and nation when elementary grades are spilt. Moving our grade 3 teachers to SRS will allow them to be part of an upper elementary team when planning and implementing instruction.

Are there other benefits to our students?

School-wide enrichment and intervention practices at Sea Road are geared toward upper elementary students’ interests and readiness. School-wide practices at KES are geared more toward primary students interests and readiness.

How can I get involved?

Take the survey (open 1/19/18), join the forum (2/8/18 from 6:00-7:00 p.m. at SRS), attend a task force meeting (2/26/18 from 3:15-4:30 p.m. at KES), and / or attend a school board meeting (3/5/18 at 7:00 p.m. at KES).
